Describe your background
I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Biotechnology. My journey in biotechnology has been driven by a passion for translational research in cancer. I have gained hands-on experience through research fellowships and internships, both in India and the US, refining wet-lab skills and contributing to scientific publications. These experiences solidified my goal to pursue innovative solutions.
Describe your area of research and/or your area of specialty
My research primarily focuses on investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer progression and its immune cell interactions within the tumor microenvironment. At Moores Cancer Center, I lead in vivo experiments using mouse models, examining T-cell-tumor interactions. The goal is to uncover therapeutic insights that could improve cancer treatment outcomes.
Describe your involvement within the department and UC San Diego (were/are you involved in student orgs, recreation, certificate programs, internships, etc. outside of curricular requirements?)
I volunteered whenever I could with BEGS during my time here and when the department hosted any events, I would assist with setting up during the event. I had an internship during the summer at Organogenesis Inc., that was focused on regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
Have you received any outstanding mentorship or guidance during your time in the program that made an impact on your research and/or the trajectory of your career?
The mentorship I received at Moores Cancer Center has been invaluable, especially in experimental design and developing a rigorous scientific approach. Guidance from faculty and senior researchers has shaped my ability to think critically and pursue innovative research questions, influencing both my research output and professional development.
Have you received any awards, graduate grants or fellowships that contributed to your success in the program?
I was awarded the UCSD Masters Educational Incentive Award which has provided both recognition and support for my graduate studies when I received the admit to the program.
What has been your favorite part about your graduate experience in the program?
My favourite aspect has been the collaborative culture working alongside driven researchers and having access to world-class labs has been hugely motivating. The opportunity to contribute to high impact projects and the supportive mentorship has made my graduate journey rewarding.
Any thoughts or advice you'd like to share with prospective graduate students?
I would encourage students to embrace interdisciplinary learning, build strong mentorship relationships and participate in science talks and conferences and seek internship opportunities to have a broader view of how science works from an industry point of view.
If you are an Alumni from our program, what is your current role, or what are your career prospects and plans for the future?
I am looking to gain industry experience and learn more on different research areas after which I aim to come back to school for my PhD.
