Describe your background
I received my BS in Biotechnology Engineering in Mexico at ITESO University. For my undergraduate thesis I worked on bio nanosensors for HPV. During the completion of my undergraduate degree, I also worked on an entrepreneurial project focusing on a probiotically enhanced intimate hygiene product focused on maintaining a healthy vaginal microbiome and preventing infections from Candida sp.
Describe your area of research and/or your area of specialty
My research focused on the dispersion mechanisms of bacterial biofilms, and exploiting the biofilm's natural ability to disperse to treat biofilm-associated infections, which is around 75%-80% of all human infections. We believe that understanding the biomechanics of dispersion could also lead to better understanding of dynamic dispersion events in other systems and reveal general insights into how cells leave communities, such as metastasis.
What has been your favorite part about your graduate experience in the program?
My favorite part of my graduate experience has been being in the lab and feeling a sense of purpose in the pursuit of knowledge, not necessarily for myself but knowledge that could potentially be useful to humanity. I have also really enjoyed building community and the opportunity to make friends with people with very diverse backgrounds. This has definitely enhanced my learning and living experience at UCSD.
Any thoughts or advice you'd like to share with prospective graduate students?
My advice to prospective graduate students is to build community and remember to have fun. It is crucial to have a solid support system throughout your graduate studies who will also remind you to relax. Also, to remember that there is no "perfect" and to love what you do (which is not always the same as doing what you love!).
If you are an Alumni from our program, what is your current role, or what are your career prospects and plans for the future?
I hope to go into industry and I will be looking for scientist roles in the Boston area.
