- Technical Elective (TE) Course Requirements
-
Technical Elective (TE) Course Requirements can be satisfied by 4-unit, upper-division “engineering” courses or by a combination of “engineering and science” courses, as described below. All courses must be taken for letter grades.
Courses with “engineering” as the primary component which are usually approved, include most 4-unit, upper-division (100 series) courses taken for a letter grade, not required for the major and taught in one of the departments of the Jacobs School of Engineering. NOTE: Any prerequisite courses required for a course to be used to satisfy a TE must also be completed.
Any portion of the 8 unit TE requirement not fulfilled by “engineering” courses must be fulfilled by “science” courses. Courses with “science” as the primary component which are usually approved, are 4-unit, upper-division (100 series) courses taken for a letter grade, not required for the major and taught in the Division of Biological Sciences, or the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, or Physics. Courses having a laboratory component are acceptable.
- BENG 199
-
BENG 199, Independent Study Research courses (or "19" courses from another engineering department) may also be used to satisfy the TE requirement. Students majoring in Bioengineering, Bioengineering: Biotechnology and Bioengineering: Biosystems must enroll (with the same faculty member) in two quarters of BENG 199 to receive TE credit. Receiving a passing grade (BENG 199 courses are only graded on a P/NP basis) for both quarters of BENG 199 will satisfy the eight units of TE course requirements as well as the required number of "engineering-related" TE units for these three majors.
- Bioengineering: Bioinformatics Majors
-
Bioengineering: Bioinformatics majors may satisfy the 8-unit TE requirements by completion of "engineering" and/or 199 courses. Students interested in research are encouraged to enroll for a minimum of two quarters of BENG 199 to promote more "in-depth" study of the research topic. (It is sometimes possible for 199 courses from another department to be used to satisfy the TE requirement in the Bioengineering: Bioinformatics major. Interested students should contact staff in the Bioengineering Student Affairs Office and submit a petition that must be approved prior to start in 199 courses.)
- BENG 197 or BENG 198
-
BENG 197 or BENG 198 courses may not be used to satisfy TE requirements in any majors in the Department of Bioengineering unless a special exception is made by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.
